Nephi’s Story

One of the most powerful lessons I have learnt while being at W.H.Y is that life is better living in community. I’ve learnt that creating connections with others invests into more opportunities both for myself and to build up others.

Kia ora! My name is Nephi Popata and I’m 21 years of age. I am Maori and 1 of 5 siblings. My upbringing was full of drugs, alcohol and a lot of fighting. I was one to always want to get out of the house. Anything that gave me an excuse to leave, I took. My cousin invited me to this Youth called “What Hope,” and as soon as I walked in I felt welcomed and loved. I had never felt that kind of love before. From then on I started going every week.

I started W.H.Y (What Hope Youth) back in 2014. I still remember the first time I stepped through the doors, I’ve been connected ever since and never looked back.

I have developed a lot through these the years of connection with What Hope. From being the kid who stands at the back, to leading in many areas and stepping out of my comfort zone. I have been given various opportunities and experienced so many places where my confidence has grown and been challenged. I can say my leadership skills have developed heaps and also my character.

One of the most powerful lessons I have learnt while being at W.H.Y is that life is better living in community. I’ve learnt that creating connections with others invests into more opportunities both for myself and to build up others. I've learnt that opportunities lead to opportunities. I've also learnt that growth happens outside of my comfort zone. I have watched my confidence grow through every new experience and challenge.

I now have a Certificate in Youth Development and currently working on my Diploma. My dreams and hopes for the future is to help rangatahi achieve their goals and push them to be the best they can be. The goal for myself would be to continue growing and stepping out of my comfort zone. I hope to see the kids I once helped become leaders in their community.

If it wasn't for W.H.Y. I wouldn’t have met so many amazing people that have blessed me and contributed to my life in so many ways. With their support I even completed a full marathon in Queenstown!

If I were to describe myself in three words they would be: genuine, passionate and competitive.
